Chain-of-Thought Prompting

Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompting involves explicitly asking the AI to 'think step-by-step' or 'explain your reasoning' before giving its final answer. This encourages the AI to break down complex problems into smaller, manageable steps, mimicking human thought processes. It helps surface the AI's internal logic, making its responses more robust and less prone to errors, especially on multi-step tasks. Instead of just asking 'What's the best strategy?', you'd ask 'Outline the key factors to consider for a marketing strategy, then suggest a strategy based on those factors.'

In plain terms

It's like asking a student to 'show their work' on a math problem, rather than just providing the answer. You see how they got there, and they're more likely to be correct.

Why it matters

Use this to get more reliable, detailed, and accurate answers from AI, especially for tasks requiring multiple stages of reasoning or complex decisions. It transforms superficial answers into well-reasoned outputs.
