Progressive Disclosure
Progressive disclosure is a design principle where you initially show only essential information to avoid overwhelming the user, then reveal more details or options upon request. When interacting with an AI, this means starting with a high-level request and then drilling down into specifics. For example, instead of asking for 'a detailed marketing plan for a new organic coffee shop targeting Gen Z in Brooklyn, including social media strategies, influencer outreach, local event partnerships, and a budget breakdown,' you'd start with 'Give me a marketing plan for a new organic coffee shop.' After receiving the basic outline, you'd then ask, 'Now, refine this plan to specifically target Gen Z in Brooklyn.' This prevents the AI from getting sidetracked and allows you to guide its output more effectively, like peeling an onion layer by layer.
Imagine ordering food at a restaurant. Instead of listing every ingredient and preparation detail for your meal upfront, you first state your main dish, then perhaps specify dietary restrictions or cooking preferences. You're progressively disclosing your requirements.
This technique helps you manage complexity and get more relevant, structured AI responses by breaking down large tasks into manageable steps, preventing overwhelm for both you and the AI.
