Hierarchical Outlining

For longer pieces of content, like reports, articles, or presentations, begin by prompting the AI to generate a detailed, multi-level outline (e.g., Title, Section 1: Intro, Subpoint A, Subpoint B, Section 2: Body, etc.). Once you approve the structure, instruct the AI to generate content for each section or subsection independently, referring back to the overarching outline. For example, first, 'Create a detailed outline for a report on Q3 marketing performance, including sections for key metrics, successful campaigns, challenges, and future recommendations.' Then, 'Expand on the 'Successful Campaigns' section from the outline, focusing on social media engagement.'

In plain terms

It's like an architect first designing the blueprint for a house, ensuring the foundation and rooms are logically laid out, before the builders start filling in the details for each room.

Why it matters

This technique ensures logical flow and comprehensive coverage for complex documents, preventing the AI from straying off-topic or missing crucial elements, leading to more structured and coherent outputs.
