Decomposition for Complex Tasks

Decomposition means breaking down a large, complex task into smaller, more manageable sub-tasks for the AI to complete sequentially. Instead of asking the AI to do everything at once, you guide it through a step-by-step process. For instance, to write a detailed report, instead of 'Write a report on X,' you'd prompt: 'First, outline the key sections for a report on X. Second, for each section, list 3-5 key points. Third, draft the introduction based on these points. Fourth, expand on section one, etc.' This prevents the AI from becoming overwhelmed or missing crucial details. Before, I'd get a superficial report; after, I get a structured, comprehensive draft.

In plain terms

Like building a Lego model by following instructions step-by-step, rather than just throwing all the bricks at the wall and hoping for a complete structure.

Why it matters

Decomposition leads to more thorough, organized, and accurate outputs for challenging requests, as the AI can focus its 'attention' on one part at a time. Break down big requests into a series of smaller, explicit steps.
