Also called: prompts
A prompt is the input, usually text, that you give to an AI model to tell it what you want it to do or create.
Think of a prompt as your conversation starter with an AI. It's the set of words, phrases, or even longer passages that you send to an AI model, like a large language model or an image generator. The AI then uses this prompt as instructions or inspiration to produce its output, whether it's a story, a summary, an answer to a question, or an image.
A well-crafted prompt is key to getting good results from an AI. It can include specific commands, details about the desired style or format, examples, or even restraints. Learning how to write effective prompts, often called 'prompt engineering,' is a skill that helps you communicate more clearly with AI and get closer to your ideal output.
For instance, instead of just typing 'dog,' you might prompt an image AI with 'A golden retriever puppy playing in a field of sunflowers, watercolor style, bright light.' For a language AI, instead of 'write a poem,' you'd use 'Write a short, rhyming poem about the joy of learning to code, suitable for children.'
