Also called: model context protocol

Model Context Protocol. An open standard from Anthropic for connecting AI assistants to external tools and data.

MCP, or Model Context Protocol, is an open standard introduced by Anthropic in late 2024 for connecting AI assistants to external systems. It defines a common interface that lets any compliant AI assistant talk to any compliant tool or data source, whether that is a database, a Slack workspace, a code repository, or a custom internal system. Think of it as the USB-C for AI tool use. Adoption has been rapid because it removes the need to write custom integration code for every assistant.
