Devin is an artificial intelligence system that Cognition Labs, a US-based startup, introduced as the "world's first AI software engineer." Unlike many AI tools that help write small snippets of code or suggest corrections, Devin is designed to handle entire software development projects from start to finish, working autonomously. It acts as an AI agent, meaning it can observe, plan, and execute complex tasks on its own, continuously learning and adapting based on feedback, much like a human software developer.

Think of Devin as having its own dedicated workspace. It uses a command-line terminal, a code editor, and a web browser, all within its own environment. When given a task, such as "Fix a bug in this codebase" or "Build a new feature for our app," Devin plans a series of steps, writes the necessary code, tests its solutions, debugs any issues it encounters, and even deploys the finished product. It then provides progress reports to the user, explaining its thought process and actions in real-time.
