Unconventional AI has introduced Un-0, an image generator powered by a simulated system of coupled oscillators, representing an emerging physical computing substrate. Un-0 achieves an FID score of 6.74 on ImageNet 64x64, matching the quality of leading conventional image generation methods from their initial release. The model weights, training, and ablation code are open-sourced, with a goal to achieve 1000x energy efficiency gains by harnessing physics for computing.
This development proposes a fundamentally different, potentially far more energy-efficient approach to AI computation by having physical systems perform the calculations, challenging the dominance of GPU-based deep neural networks.
