Microsoft Introduces MAI-Thinking-1 for Advanced Reasoning and Software Engineering

Microsoft AI has launched MAI-Thinking-1, a medium-sized reasoning model with 35 billion active parameters and approximately 1 trillion total parameters (sparse Mixture of Experts model). Released on June 2, 2026, it aims for continuous improvement through a 'Hill-Climbing Machine' pipeline and demonstrates strong performance on software engineering benchmarks like SWE-Bench Pro and mathematical reasoning benchmarks such as AIME 2026. The model is designed for enterprise readiness with a 256k token context window, function calling, and support for complex instructions.

Why it matters

This model offers powerful reasoning capabilities at a smaller inference footprint, expanding where advanced coding assistance can be deployed in enterprise workflows.
