Microsoft AI Introduces MAI-Thinking-1 for Advanced Reasoning and Software Engineering

Microsoft AI has introduced MAI-Thinking-1, a 35-billion-active, 1-trillion-total parameter sparse Mixture of Experts model. Trained on enterprise-grade, commercially licensed data, it demonstrates strong performance on software engineering benchmarks and advanced mathematical reasoning. The model supports a 256k token context window and is available in private preview on Microsoft Foundry.

Why it matters

MAI-Thinking-1 offers a powerful, yet comparatively smaller, reasoning model for enterprise applications, aiming to integrate advanced coding and mathematical assistance into daily workflows. Its design focuses on continuous improvement through a co-designed pipeline called the Hill-Climbing Machine.
