Levitated Macroscopic Rotors Achieve 10 Hours of Free Spin at Room Temperature
A recent study published in Nature Communications reports the development of a diamagnetically levitated millimeter-scale rotor that can achieve over 10 hours of free spin at room temperature. This rotor exhibits an extremely low dissipation rate of 3.85 μHz. It can be driven up to 930 RPM using contactless electrostatic actuation in a high vacuum, functioning as a precision gyroscope with high sensitivity.
Why it matters
This breakthrough in low-dissipation macroscopic rotors could significantly advance precision sensing, enabling more accurate gyroscopes and potentially new applications in macroscopic quantum phenomena at room temperature.
