IBM to Acquire HRL Laboratories to Boost Quantum Computing and Sensing
IBM has announced its intent to acquire HRL Laboratories, LLC, a research and development institution jointly owned by Boeing and General Motors. This acquisition will strengthen IBM's quantum program by integrating HRL's expertise in silicon-spin qubit engineering and quantum sensing. HRL's work in cryogenics, control electronics, and advanced materials will help IBM develop more powerful quantum computers, such as the projected IBM Quantum Starling by 2029.
This strategic acquisition will accelerate IBM's goal of developing large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computers and expands its capabilities in quantum sensing, impacting fields like defense and life sciences.
