Google DeepMind Brings Sign Language AI to Consumer Devices

Google DeepMind has introduced SL2T (sign-language-to-text), a new multilingual translation model that brings sign language AI directly to consumer products. This technology now powers sign-to-text dictation in Gboard and Live Transcribe on Pixel 11 devices, starting with American Sign Language (ASL) to English. This allows Deaf and hard-of-hearing users to sign to their phones to search, draft messages, or respond in conversations, similar to how hearing users use voice dictation.

Why it matters

This development significantly improves accessibility for Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals, allowing them to interact with their devices and communicate more naturally and efficiently. For teachers, small business owners, and others, it opens new avenues for inclusive communication and content creation.
